PRE-WORKOUT

Kat Hoyle Updated by Kat Hoyle

Since Vivo Life’s inception we have been asked when we are going to create a pre-workout. As with all our products, we wanted to prioritize quality, effectiveness and natural sourcing of ingredients and our plant-based Pre-workout is no different. The product is completely free of artificial stimulants which sets it apart from more common place pre-workouts. The stimulative effect comes from the carefully curated blend of natural ingredients to help energize and prepare you for your training sessions.

The product highlights are as follows:

·        Plant based as standard

·        Rich in nitrates from beetroot.

·        Natural caffeine from Guarana extract (50mg per serving).

·        B Vitamin blend for energy and metabolism.

·       3.5g L-Citrulline Malate per serving.

·       Third party tested for heavy metals, fungicides, pesticides, and other contaminants as standard.

All ingredients in the blend have been thoroughly researched and demonstrate their capacity to work symbiotically to improve athletic performance when consumed in a pre-exercise setting.

Lets take a look at the functional ingredients of our Pre-Workout.

Beetroot Extract

Beetroot is rich in nitrates, a small molecule which is produced by the body in small quantities but is more often obtained from dietary sources. Nitrates, and their metabolite nitric oxide are potent regulators of blood flow and vasodilation which has far reaching positive implications for health and athletic performance.

The link between vegetable consumption and cardiovascular health is very apparent when it comes to beetroot. Nitrates appear to reduce blood pressure in the circumstances where blood pressure is raised like hypertension or during exercise, in other words it only reduces blood pressure if/when it is needed. Nitrates are also thought to have endothelial protective effects, meaning they help maintain and strengthen the protective layer of cells that line blood and lymph vessels throughout the body.

Regarding exercise performance, nitrates via beetroot have been utilized by athletes for some time. Beetroot extracts and the likes have been well documented in scientific research to enhance athletic performance via different biological mechanisms. Many of the studies have been carried out in the context of running, but there is also a growing body of research on beetroot/nitrates affect on muscular performance in more anaerobic (muscular/strength) exercise contexts.

Nitrates via beetroot extract increase venous blood flow (vasodilation) while exercising which supplies a greater amount of oxygen to the working muscles. Oxygen availability is reduced when we exercise, so this nitrate induced increase in blood flow means the muscles are less compromised and time to fatigue is reduced. In effect the oxygen cost of exercise is reduced when nitrates are present and exercise duration can be prolonged without greater cost to the body. The benefits seem to be most apparent in anaerobic cardiovascular exercise (short, sharp bursts of effort like sprinting) or muscular endurance type exercise (interval training or cross-fit type exercise) where strength and cardiovascular performance is the main component. Some benefit to longer distance cardiovascular training (aerobic) has been measured however benefits are mostly experienced in the initial instances and taper off over time.

L-Citrulline

L-citrulline is one of 3 amino acids (the other two are L-arginine and L-ornithine) that are closely involved in nitric oxide metabolism. There is only one known reliable food source of L-citrulline, watermelon! Supplementing with L-citrulline increases plasma levels of arginine and ornithine which help to improve the ammonia recycling process and nitric oxide metabolism, this reducing the rate to fatigue of working muscles. L-citrulline has the potential to benefit athletic performance in this way. It has also been shown to reduce blood pressure and improve blood flow, particularly in those experiencing hypertension. L-citrulline is a great complement to the beetroot (nitrates) content of our Pre-workout.

Guarana Extract

Guarana (Paullinia Cupana) is a fruit baring tree whose seeds are a potent natural stimulant containing more caffeine than coffee, as well as other bioactive compounds that provide various healthful benefits. Indigenous Amazonian people have known of and used Guarana seed for its medicinal and stimulating benefits for millennia and modern science can now affirm these.

Most popularly Guarana is utilized for its energy enhancing properties due to its caffeine content and it is certainly a good alternative to coffee. Although it is not confirmed it is thought that guarana may have higher antioxidant properties than coffee so it might pack more of a punch nutritionally. It is also thought that the symbiotic relationship of the bio-active compounds found in guarana seed work provides more of a stimulating affect than just caffeine alone. Caffeine as a compound stimulates the central nervous system and increases energy metabolism throughout the brain which in most cases creates an energized and focused state of being. Guarana is rich in antioxidants and the same flavonoids found in green tea, which support healthy metabolism.

So who is our Pre-workout for?

If you are a sports person, athlete, or general gym goer, you will benefit from our new Pre-workout. We recommend drinking the product within 30 minutes before you start your training session. The effects will last differently for different people, depending on your caffeine sensitivity. If you are the kind of person who feels the effects of a cup of coffee very viscerally and for a long time, you may experience the same kind of energy lift from our Pre-workout. If you experience more of a smooth, subtle caffeine lift when you drink coffee this may be the case for you. We do not use any artificial ingredients, especially stimulants. Our product will not cause the extreme caffeine lift that some pre-workouts give, the type where you are jittery and cannot focus. We pride ourselves on creating natural products that are functional, without shocking the body with artificial and extreme reactions.

How to use our Pre-workout

Prepare Pre-Workout by adding (2 level + 1 heaped Teaspoon OR 1 ½ (15ml) Vivo Scoops), add 250ml cold water and mix preferably using a shaker or blender for a smoother texture. Consume 20-30 minutes prior to exercise.
